Arrests made in Edgewood, Stafford bomb threats

The mayor’s office announced two youths have been arrested in connection with some of the bomb threats that have plagued the city since last week.

A Facebook message from the mayor said, “2 arrests were made today. One from Stafford School and one from Edgewood School. Both were students at the schools.”

Edgewood School had a bomb threat this morning. Stafford School’s threat came yesterday.

Bristol police dealt with two more bomb threats at city schools this morning.

They also made two arrests of two juveniles in connection with the threats.

Edgewood School and Greene-Hills School were both evacuated after threats were found.

An arrest was made in connection with the Edgewood School threat. An arrest also was made in connection with a threat made at Stafford School on Wednesday.

The names of those arrested were not released by Bristol police.

In a press release, police explained that today, June 5, at about 10:32 a.m., a bomb threat was reported at Edgewood Elementary School. Police said a message referencing a bomb was discovered in a female bathroom within the school. Police said students were evacuated from the school and a search of the building was conducted. No suspicious devices were located and students were allowed to return to class.

Police said the investigation identified a possible suspect, which ultimately led to a confession and arrest of a 10 year old female student.  The student was charged with falsely reporting an incident, first degree threatening, second degree reckless endangerment, and second degree breach of peace. The girl was referred to Juvenile Court. 

Police said the investigation is ongoing at Edgewood. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Bristol Police Department at (860)584-3000.       

Additionally, at Greene-Hills today, June 5, a bomb threat was reported at 2:37 p.m. Police said a message referencing a bomb was discovered in a female bathroom within the school. Students were evacuated from the school and subsequently released to parents as the scheduled release time was at 2:50 p.m. The building was searched and no suspicious devices were discovered, said police.

The investigation at Greene-Hills also is ongoing.

Police also said the investigation of the Stafford Elementary School bomb threat on June 4 identified a possible suspect, which ultimately led to a confession and arrest of a 10-year-old female student.

Police said the student was charged with falsely reporting an incident, first degree threatening, second degree reckless endangerment, and second degree breach of peace and referred to Juvenile Court. 

The investigation at Stafford also is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (860)584-3000.

On Wednesday, Mayor Ken Cockayne said the city will be seeking full restitution of the expenses for the city responding to these false threats. He also said the city has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of those who made the threats.

A 13-year-old was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a bomb threat at Chippens Hill Middle School.

Bristol Central, Bristol Eastern, and St. Paul Catholic high schools, and Northeast Middle School also have received bomb threats.

Earlier tonight, a forum on the bomb threats was held by the city at Bristol Eastern High School where the mayor, Police Chief Thomas Grimaldi, and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ellen Solek were available to answer questions.

Couple accused of trying to break in to vehicles on Burlington Ave.

A man and a woman were arrested on Thursday morning after police say they were spotted trying to break into vehicles on Burlington Avenue

Officers charged Jared J. Garand, 25, of 79 Birch St. in Unionville, with burglary in the third degree, criminal attempt at larceny sixth degree and conspiracy to commit larceny in the sixth degree. Police also arrested Nicole Raboin, 22, of 172 North St.,  A-1, Bristol with criminal attempt at burglary in the third degree, criminal attempt at larceny sixth degree, and conspiracy to commit larceny in the sixth degree.

Police said that at approximately 12:40 a.m. on Thursday, officers responded to apartments at 59 Burlington Ave. Police had received a complaint about two suspicious individuals in the parking lot. The complainant provided the dispatcher with a description of the individuals, the vehicle they drove off in, and their direction of travel, said police.

Shortly after the call, police said an officer located the occupied suspect vehicle at the Snow-White Car Wash of 12 Farmington Ave.  Subsequent investigation by officers revealed that the male found in this vehicle had illegally entered a parked vehicle at the apartment complex while the female in this vehicle was pulling on door handles of other vehicles attempting to enter.

Garand and Raboin were each held on $10,000 and $5,000 bonds, respectively.
